Leeds Carnegie winger Tom Biggs was one of the stars of the show for the England Sevens team in last weekend's Emirates Airline London Sevens tournament, at Twickenham.
Biggs, who finished the season as Leeds Carnegie's leading try scorer and broke the club's try scoring record held previously by Dan Scarbrough, helped England make the best possible start to the competition by scoring a hat trick in their first pool game against Spain.
England went onto progress to the quarter finals after beating France to finish second in their pool behind South Africa. In the final eight they faced World Series champions New Zealand, where they had to fight back from a 12 point deficit, after conceding two early tries. Ben Foden pulled a try back for England and Kevin Barrett then scored a close range try to help level the game. With the closing stages of the game approaching England were reduced to six men and it seemed as though they had blown their chances but it was the Leeds man who secured the win with a sensational last second try. Biggs latched onto a loose ball before outstripping the New Zealand defence with a marvellous diagonal run for a match winning try in the corner. England progressed to the semi final with the 17-12 win, where they faced Samoa but this game was to end disappointingly despite another spectacular effort from Biggs. From the start England were tested defensively but it took Samoa until just seconds before the end of the first half to score a converted try through Reupena Lavasa. England then conceded a second try through Alafoti Fa'osiliva leaving them facing an uphill struggle. Biggs was brought on from the bench and gave the side a lift with his fifth try of the day. Cruelly for England though Gollings missed the conversion which proved costly, as despite scoring a second converted try through Ben Fodden England were denied any further points and went out of the competition after losing 14-12.
