Carnegie Call

In this weeks edition of Carnegie Call Director of Rugby Stuart Lancaster looks ahead to Leeds Carnegie's clash at Bristol in the EDF Energy Cup this Sunday.

HOW HAVE YOU REFLECTED ON LAST WEEKS GAME?

Having had a chance to reflect and review again the defeat by Leicester, my feelings remain largely unaltered in that there were a lot of positives to take out of the performance in a game where we matched them in many areas. However, their ability to take their chances when they got the opportunity was the difference between the two sides. Obviously, this has been and will continue to be a large focus area for us with the ability to execute to a high level under pressure a prerequisite for elite performance.

HOW ARE YOU APPROACHING THIS WEEKS GAME?

This weeks' game against Bristol in the EDF Energy Cup gives us an ideal opportunity to work on those areas from the Leicester game against quality opposition. People have called this game a "dead rubber" in that neither side can qualify, I don't buy that. I have yet to come across a game at any level of rugby that doesn't mean anything whether it be a A XV game, a Vets match or a friendly. I expect all the selected players to go all out and get the win, which will help build momentum and grow self belief still further.
It presents an opportunity for one or two players who have been on the fringe to get an opportunity and for others to take a well earned rest. From a personal point of view, it is pleasing to give Phil Nilsen and Scott Armstrong their first starts of the season. Those that have followed their progress through the Academy and into the A XV games will recognise their potential and I am will be looking forward to watching them and the team perform at the weekend.
