Leeds Carnegie coaching pair of Stuart Lancaster and Daryl Powell were in attendance on Wednesday when Leeds Met's Rugby Union first team started their BUSA campaign in the Rugby Union Premier league with a thrilling victory over Newcastle.
The side came from 26-10 down with 15 minutes left to snatch the win 28-26.
The opening stages of the game were dominated by Leeds Met especially around the set pieces. Through the expert coaching of Leeds Carnegie prop Tom McGee Leeds Met's scrum was rampant, Newcastle with no answer to the superior power and skill.
As Leeds Met took control of the set pieces they gained the field position to launch their first attacks breaking twice down the left hand side only to see their chances go begging and the final pass was dropped. It was not long before the pressure told and Leeds Met were on the score board, a fumbled ball by the Newcastle scrum half led to an easy try for Leeds Met touching down beneath the sticks.
The try seemed to wake Newcastle and they replied with a try of their own. Not long after they were ahead, Leeds Met found themselves down to 14 men with Iryan Clunis sin binned for repeated infringements around the ruck. The visitors took advantage of the extra forward and powered over from close range. Newcastle stretched their advantage two minutes later with a repeat of their last try. Leeds Met looked in danger of collapsing but with the return of Clunis they steadied the ship and Leeds Carnegie fly half Richard Vasey added a drop goal leaving Leeds Met 21-10 down at half time.
If Leeds Met had a mountain to climb at half time it was made even harder within five minutes of the restart as Newcastle sneaked over to the right of the sticks. The conversion was missed leaving Leeds Met 26-10 down.
With 15 minutes on the clock Leeds Met squeezed in at the corner for what looked like a mere consolation try.
However, when they were awarded a penalty try three minutes later for collapsing a maul the game was back in the balance.
With four minutes left Richard Vasey slotted a drop goal from thirty meters out to edge Leeds Met ahead. Leeds Met clung on for their first win in their inaugural game in the BUSA Premier North.
Meanwhile, the BUSA women's rugby team beat Loughborough 65-0 in a comprehensive victory.
