Two tries from Apo Satala were not enough to prevent Leeds Carnegie losing out 34-15 to Bath at Headingley Carnegie.
The home side were given a tough examination in the opening minutes as Bath spent the first six minutes camped five metres from the Leeds line. However, a fantastic tackle and drive from John Holtby rocked Bath and gave Leeds the chance to clear their lines from a penalty. But the line out was pinched by the visitors and they then earned a penalty in midfield which Olly Barkley kicked to make it 3-0 after seven minutes.
Leeds overcame that early set back and had the best chance to score a try in the opening quarter. A loose clearing kick by Bath was fielded by Satala, who galloped upfield before releasing Leigh Hinton down the wing. The full back chipped ahead but was only just prevented from regathering to score by a desperate dive from Barkley.
However, Leeds were left to rue that missed chance when Joe Maddock finished off a flowing cross field move from Bath to score the opening try of the game after 18 minutes. Barkley's conversion making the score 10-0.
Barkley extended the visitors lead even further after 24 minutes with a penalty before Leeds had another great chance. Again it was Satala and Hinton who combined, the former barrelling his way forward through three would-be tacklers before the latter was dragged into touch trying to score in the corner.
The home side did finally get a reward for their efforts when Hinton kicked a penalty after 30 minutes after Bath had used hands in the ruck to disrupt Leeds' attack.
The first half fizzled out as a contest as both team struggled to keep control of the ball for a prolonged period of time leaving the home side trailing by ten at the break.
Leeds came out a determined side after the interval and took the game to Bath. John Holtby and Andy Tuilagi both made good breaks in midfield before Jonny Hepworth made the decisive attack. The centre cut through on half way and sprinted clear. With just the last man to beat he threw out a floated pass to Satala to score in the corner. Hinton could not add the conversion so the score remained 13-8.
Bath finally clicked into gear after that score and had a period of pressure on the leads line. Twice the visitors contrived to miss opportunities when it appeared easier to score but eventually Danny Grewcock was forced over from a set move from the base of a 5 metre scrum after 56 minutes.
Five minutes later Bath put the result beyond doubt with their third try as back rower Jonny Faamatuinu dived over from close range. Barkley converted both tries to make the score 27-8 to the visitors.
However, Leeds never gave up the fight and they got their second try of the afternoon after 67 minutes when Satala incredibly got the ball down one handed under pressure from two Bath defenders next to the corner flag. Alberto Di Bernardo kicked an equally impressive touchline conversion to make it 27-15.
Bath though had the last word as they wrapped up a bonus point win with their fourth try through winger Matt Banahan who wrong footed his opposite number Holtby to score in the corner. Barkley made it six from six with the boot to make the final score 34-15 to Bath.
