Leeds Carnegie return to European action in their next home game on the 9th November as they begin their ERC Challenge Cup campaign against French side Castres Olympique. Castres are one of the oldest clubs in French rugby, having been founded in 1898. They have since grown into one of the country's top clubs and have not been out of Division One since 1921. They have won the French Championship on three occasions and have been runners up in the European Challenge Cup on two occasions and won the European Shield back in 2003. For the past three seasons Castres have competed in the Heineken Cup but have been unable to progress further than the group stages of the competition. Last season, having finished eleventh in the Top 14, they failed to qualify for a Heineken Cup spot.
This will be the first time that Leeds and Castres have played each other, although Leeds Carnegie have plenty of experience against French opposition having played Beziers, Toulouse, Grenoble and Perpignan in previous European campaigns.
