Leeds Carnegie suffered a club record defeat at Saracens as they conceded ten tries in a 66-7 loss at Vicarage Road.
Leeds arrived at Vicarage Road in confident mood after a draw and win in their previous outings however any thoughts of a Houdini act were wiped out by an awesome first half display of clinical finishing by Saracens.
The Men in Black were knocked out of the EDF Energy Cup by the Ospreys last weekend and perhaps with the thought of a revenge game in the Heineken Cup against the same opposition next week they looked like a team on a mission.
The home side opened the scoring after just five minutes when former Rotherham prop Nick Lloyd was driven over from a line out close to the Leeds line. Glen Jackson added the conversion to make it 7-0.
That was the first time in five games that Leeds Carnegie have not scored the first try in their games and they had a chance to hit back three minutes later by Leigh Hinton's penalty attempt hit the post and bounced safe to let Saracens off the hook.
Leeds showed some great attacking intentions, in particular Leigh Hinton was outstanding with ball in hand, however it was individual errors on defence that cost them dear.
After 18 minutes Argentine winger Francisco Leonelli took advantage of a great dart by his skipper Neil de Kock, which took him passed the despairing Rob Rawlinson, and the winger had space to race through to score.
Three minutes later centre Adam Powell stepped through a gap between Erik Lund and Adam Hopcroft and strided through to score his side's third try. Jackson converted both tries to give his side a 21-0 lead.
Saracens secured the bonus point after just 28 minutes with the try of the game. Hooker Matt Cairns created the chance as he busted through a tackle in midfield and then quick hands saw the ball shipped along the backline before Leonelli finished off the move.
The winger completed his hat trick with six minutes remaining in the half when he again finished off some good play by back rower Don Barrell to score in the corner with a second effort. Jackson's conversion made it 33-0 at the interval.
Having scored five tries in the first half, the home side did not take their foot off the gas after the break. They scored after just four minutes when Hugh Vyvyan was on hand to touch down a grubber kick from Kameli Ratuvou. Jackson missed only his second kick of the day but his side led 38-0.
Replacement Tom Ryder was the next player celebrating as he crashed over from close range between the posts. Jackson's conversion making it 45-0.
Saracens rubbed salt in the wound just after the hour mark with two quick fire tries to bring up the half century. Ratavou showed blistering pace to take him round John Holtby and Jon Goodridge to score a deserved try. Jackson slided through the Leeds defence then for his side's ninth try of the game and he converted both tries to make it 59-0 and Leeds were looking at a club record defeat.
All credit to the visitors though, they never allowed their head to drop, in particular Mike MacDonald gave his absolute all, and the giant prop was on hand when Saracens spilled possession in midfield. His quick thinking saw him release Stuart Hooper and the Leeds skipper galloped away to score between the posts to finally get his side on the scoreboard after 75 minutes. Brooks added the conversion with a drop goal to make it 59-7.
Unsurprisingly, Saracens had the last word though as full back Brent Russell was on hand to touchdown a clever kick by Ratuvou in the last minute. Jackson added the conversion to make the final score 66-7.
The result was the club's biggest ever defeat in League rugby beating the previous low of 64-14 against Wasps in 2001 and was also the first time that Leeds have conceded ten tries in league rugby, beating the eight conceded against Newcastle in 2006 and Gloucester in 2001.
