The Guinness Rugby Show starts this week on talkSPORT Radio presented by Sky Sports Rhodri Williams and former England captan Will Carling. The show will be on every Sunday night from 8pm till 10pm on talkSPORT Radio and fans can listen on their analogue radios at 1089 & 1053am/mw or via www.talksport.net.
Here the presenters give us a guide to the new show:
Q: The Guinness Rugby Show - What's it all about then?
Will: It's a relaxed, humorous but honest look at that week's rugby and all the breaking rugby news, and the chance to interact with special guests like Josh Lewsey and Lewis Moody, and people that are just special, like Rhodri
Rhodri: Yeah, thanks Will.
Well let's shout from the rooftops here - We are the only dedicated rugby show on a National Radio Platform. Soon the Sunday nighttime slot will become part of rugby fans weekend. Remember how Rugby Special years ago was part of the staple rugby diet. I think The Guinness Rugby Show can be the place for rugby fans to get expert opinions on all the week's big rugby stories. Keep up to date with all the results. Hear from the biggest names in the game and very importantly have their say on domestic and international rugby.
Q: You two have been working together on talkSPORT since the World Cup now. how are you gelling as a team?
Will: We are not, and personally I hope we never do. Lets not forget, Rhodri is Welsh!
Rhodri: You're just jealous. Joking apart though, I find Will very easy to get on with. He may give me a hard time, mainly for being Welsh, but Will doesn't take himself too seriously and therefore makes himself very accessible to rugby fans. Will has been moderately successful somehow picking up 72 England caps, and everyone (well other than 99% of Welsh fans) respect that.
Q: You're both pretty big blokes, who'd win in an arm wrestle?
Will: He might be big, but it is all wind and Guinness, so no competition - he would stuff me.
Rhodri: I'm pretty confident I'd take Will in this challenge. Although I may need to train up a little. Will is pretty compact short levers and all that - could be tricky.
Q: Why do you think radio is such a great platform for rugby chat?
Will: Firstly you don't have to look at Rhodri's face, sadly I do, and secondly you can wear what the hell you like and there is no make up (downside for the Welshman I know!)
Rhodri: Rugby Union has always generated intelligent banter and therefore radio provides the ideal platform for this. We have more time to talk on radio as well and with so many top class players and rugby legends up for coming on the show we can cover so many relevant topics. Some chat is totally irrelevant but it can be fairly amusing, especially our Rugger Bugger Bloke Test.
Q: What's that all about then?
Will: Basically, we ask rugby players a series of questions and determine whether or not they're real blokes. I'm obviously near the top of pile, and somehow Rob Andrew is on the same points as me.
Rhodri: I scored quite badly, mainly cause Will was marking me. I dropped serious points for having my ear pierced in my younger days and admitting to waxing!
We started it as a bit of fun, and now it's become a cracking feature, and when you find out that hard-men like Zinzan Brooke and Justin Marshall both had sunbeds, or that James Simpson-Daniel had to dive into a lake to save his puppy from drowning after Phil Vickery threw it in, you get to see a side of rugby players you don't see on the pitch.
Q: You've had some great guests over the last few months. Why do you think rugby players are so much more approachable than the over-paid, over-hyped footballing counterparts?
Will: They have their feet on the ground, and most have a good sense of humour
Rhodri: Rugby Players, even the most highly paid ones are still closely attached to reality. The top earning footballers are so wealthy they live in fairytale land. Nothing against the footballers - that's just the way it is.
