Rugby and Art come together

Rugby and art might not immediately appear to be obvious team mates but a new exhibition at contemporary art space PSL tackles the pairing head on.
'Match report', an exhibition of new work by artist Jason Minsky, is the culmination of 12 months' spent working as Artist in Residence at Leeds Rugby Foundation and the first time the work will be shown publicly, alongside a collection of memorabilia presented by the Foundation.
Minsky takes pleasure in seeing everyday events in an original and distinctive way, using sport as a way of making his point.  This new exhibition at PSL reflects his engagement with the Headingley Carnegie Stadium's players, supporters and the wider community.  The exhibition includes photographs showing the rugby ground as viewed from the cricket ground and vice versa (including one that captures a confused Kevin Sinfield with a cricket ball in his hand); films of fans recounting their memories of past games. Visitors will also be able to join in, karaoke style, and sing along with well known chants from Carnegie and the Rhinos.
Minsky states:  "What I felt overwhelmingly from the Foundation, the players and fans alike, is the all round passion surrounding the stadium.  In particular the community feel which let me capture a slice of Headingley and take the sport out of the ground and into the neighbourhood."
Commenting on the exhibition, Chris Rostron, the Leeds Rugby Foundation General Manager said:  "We are really excited about Jason's exhibition.  This is the first time a professional rugby club has been involved with an Artist in Residence and to see Jason's exhibition will be fantastic.  Jason has captured so much of what goes on here at the stadium both on and off match days.  The exhibition itself offers so much and no fan will want to miss out on such a display".
Kerry Harker, co director at PSL commented: "Jason has brought together a selection of work that is both amusing and emotive.  He has captured the essence of supporting a team, of being part of a sporting community, while at the same time producing fantastic visual and performance art and making his own personal commentary on the sport."
The exhibition is curated by PSL's Co-directors Pippa Hale, Kerry Harker and Diane Howse and will include weekly events that tie in with the exhibition.
'Match Report' is supported by: Arts Council England; K W Linfoot Plc; Leeds Rugby Foundation and Leeds Metropolitan University.
