Following the half term break, the EDF Energy National Schools Rugby Programme will return next week with a bang.
On Friday 2nd November, from 1.00pm - 3.00pm, Selby Rugby Club will play host to the first of our EDF Energy festivals. Schools from the Selby cluster will be in attendance which includes Whitley & Eggborough, Kirk Smeaton, Camblesforth, Chapel Haddlesey, Barlow, Drax, Brayton, Hensall and Hirst Courtney.
The festival, which is the culmination of each school receiving 6 weeks of TAG rugby coaching by Rugby Development Officer Gareth Cook, will see over 100 youngsters taking part.
Primary school children, aged between 7 and 11 years old, will compete in a round robin event, with eventual winners going on to represent Yorkshire on the day of the EDF Energy Cup Final at Twickenham.
No matter who wins, the aim of the programme is to help develop the game at grass roots level, and hopefully many of the youngsters who are playing rugby for the first time, will enjoy themselves so much, that they will look to join the junior section at Selby RUFC with whom we have great links.
As we enter the new academic term, Gareth Cook will start delivering the next phase of the programme to a new cluster of schools which are:- Brotherton & Byram, Barkston Ash, Kirk Fenton, Saxton, Burton Salmon, Monk Fryston, and Longmans Hill, whom Leeds Carnegie fans may remember, as they were the last side to represent the programme for Yorkshire at Twickenham.
