New & improved Leeds Carnegie Rugby camp programme

New & improved Leeds Carnegie Rugby camp programme

Leeds Carnegie are extremely proud of the reputation the community team have built over recent years, with thousands of youngsters from right across Yorkshire and beyond having taken part in the Carnegie community programme in one form or another.  The outstanding community work the club are involved in has recently been recognised at national level, when the Leeds Rugby Foundation (the Charitable Trust that runs all community activity of Leeds Carnegie and sister club Leeds Rhinos) was nominated for a prestigious award at the high profile Sports Industry Awards in London, which last year saw prizes presented to the likes of Nike, Adidas, David Beckham, the Emirates Stadium and Carlsberg.  The Leeds Rugby Foundation will be up against six other projects for the Community award including Barclays Spaces for Sports, Kellogg's Swim Active and Tesco Get Active Programme and are aiming to become the first rugby club to ever win the Community Award.

Now in 2008, Leeds Carnegie are set to revamp their programme, taking their camps to the next level and provide even more specialist coaching and input than ever before.  This summer will see the NEW Leeds Carnegie camps put youngsters through their paces and offer so much more.

One of the key objectives is to help develop the sport at grass roots level, ensuring that youngsters learn some real rugby skills as well as enjoying themselves.  We firmly believe that Leeds Carnegie players play a fundamental part in passing on some of their knowledge to children, which is why we always try to have players attend our camps to pass on their rugby experience and skills.

The Leeds Carnegie rugby camp programme is spearheaded by England and British Lion international, John Bentley, now the community Marketing Manager for the club.  John Bentley was a key figure, and a huge personality, in the Lions 2 - 1 Test success in 1997 and is one of the elite body of players to have gained international honours in both Rugby Union and League.

John is assisted by three members of the Leeds Carnegie community team, Adam Blades, Gareth Cook and Adam Falkner.  Adam Blades has worked for Leeds for over four years and plays as a prop for neighbouring Halifax RUFC in National Division Two and boasts a call up to the England Counties squad as one of his greatest rugby achievements.  Gareth joined Leeds in the summer of 2005 and immediately helped deliver the highly successful summer camp programme that year having previously worked with the RFU as a Rugby Community Coach.  Similarly, Adam Falkner has recently joined the club following a stint working with the RFU as a Rugby Community Coach and has previously coached on many rugby camps.  In addition, Leeds Carnegie have developed a fantastic relationship with the Yorkshire RFU with whom we work very closely and a number of Yorkshire RFU coaches assist us with the camp delivery.

With players grouped according to age, size and position, the Leeds Carnegie coaching staff aim to improve the skills of every player that takes part with particular focus on a number of areas:-

SAQ

Speed, Agility and Quickness.  Using professional speed ladders, hurdles and agility poles, players can develop their footwork and reaction time combined with co-ordination to improve them as a player.

Contact Area

Rucking and mauling are essential aspects of rugby and Leeds Carnegie coaches can provide players with new knowledge to secure the ball in contact.  Activities will include counter rucking, defensive organisation, rolling mauls and much more.

Wrestling

The Leeds Carnegie Community team have started to use wrestling as a way of improving upper body strength, body positioning, channelling aggression and discipline.  The wrestling aspect is proving to be one of the most enjoyable parts of the camp and helps to replicate real game time situations which many Premiership sides have adopted.

Tackling

The older players on the camp will take part in an advanced tackling clinic focusing on the role of the defender and the importance of nominating and communicating with the rest of their team.  Players will develop their passive and active tackle technique.  The younger children who may never have tackled before will go through the basics with safety as an underpinning factor.  The tackle will go from being on their knees to running in to a defender.  Each child will work with someone of their own age and size.

Warming Up

A thorough warm up will be provided prior to the morning and afternoon sessions.  The warm up is an important aspect to the camps ensuring that the body is ready for the type of activity that is to be carried out.  The reasons for a good warm up technique includes increasing the flow of oxygen around the body and to get all appropriate muscles working prior to training.

Player Visits

Every Leeds Carnegie camp is attended by Leeds Carnegie players who talk about life as a professional Premiership rugby player.  Areas included involve nutritional requirements, good attitude, and developing good manners.  Players will spend the afternoon helping with the coaching demands, giving position specific advice before remaining for photographs and signing autographs for those who would like them.

Games

The best way to develop new skills is to put them in to game situations.  Both contact and non-contact conditioned games will aid players in their understanding of the game.  Games include: 3D touch, 4 corners touch, Ruck touch, Kabbadi and actual rugby matches.

NEW Testing / Carnegie Challenge

Over the course of the 2 days specific focus will be given to new areas this year.  These include looking at taking part in sprint testing, video analysis, nutritional requirements, and participation in the Kick, Pass & Run challenge (with leading participants being invited to run out at Twickenham representing Yorkshire against regional areas from all over the country).

SAFETY & SUPERVISION

The most important aspect of a Leeds Carnegie Rugby Camp is safety.  All the coaches involved are RFU qualified and have previously worked with groups of young rugby players.  As such all coaching staff are CRB checked.

There are an increasing number of sport camp programmes in today's market place, some which are good and others which are not.  We work closely with the Yorkshire RFU ensuring that the coaching youngsters receive is both safe and beneficial.  We would recommend that parents check prior to booking their youngsters on any form of camp that they are accredited by a governing body to do so.

We do advise that children who wish to attend do wear any protective clothing that is normally used, although special consideration will be made for contact situations.  Gum shields are compulsory.

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BRITISH ARMY

As part of the World Cup build up in 1999, the England rugby team spent time training with the marines, as did the Leeds Carnegie squad at the start of last season.  Not only to get them in to the best physical shape they could be in, but also to teach them the fundamentals of team work and bonding.  With the involvement of the British Army this camp will give each participant that extra edge to be their best.

Premiership Rugby Academy has established a great partnership with the British Army.  We've taken the best domestic club competition in the world and paired it with the best army in the world.

The army has an unparalleled reputation for developing leadership skills and team work.  With their outstanding facilities and proud rugby heritage we couldn't think of a better place to run our classes.

Winners of the Middlesex 7's in 2003, they're also a breeding ground for England and Premiership stars like Tim Rodber, Dean Ryan and Josh Lewsey.

The Army is providing full training facilities to enable you not only to develop your rugby but also your team work and leadership skills.  Regular soldiers from the local area will put you through some exciting activities off the sports pitch such as:

  • Archery
  • Wall climbing
  • Paintball
  • Obstacle Courses
  • Mountain Biking
  • Problem Solving

The activities will also give you an insight in to a career that not only encourages sport at the highest levels but also will provide you with the facilities and time to realise your full potential.
