In this week's edition of Carnegie Call, Director of Rugby Stuart Lancaster looks ahead to Leeds Carnegie's clash with Newcastle Falcons at Headingley Carnegie, this Friday, kick off 7pm.
HOW DO YOU REFLECT ON LAST WEEKS DRAW?
Looking back to last Sunday's game at Worcester, it brings up mixed feelings surrounding the performance. As was plain to see there was a huge amount of pride and effort in our performance and to a man every player gave their all. In amongst this team effort there were also individuals who stood out, in particular Mike MacDonald who not only did his tight work, which there was plenty of, but also made 17 tackles which is quite some achievement for a front row player.
I was also far happier with our focus, there are many pressures coming at the players in the position we are in; maintaining self belief on a losing run, not allowing our league position to dominate our thoughts and managing the small picture, i.e. the next game, and the bigger picture, i.e. the club moving forward. We spoke after the Bristol game about our second half performance, about sticking to the game plan and mentally refocusing after the set backs that are inevitable in any game. Although we didn't get everything right in the Worcester game we were certainly more composed with controlled intensity in what was obviously a massive game for us and them.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH THIS WEEKS MUST WIN GAME?
Clarity of game plan is important for the players in their mental preparation in the lead up to the game, they need something to grab hold of before the game and something to go back to during the game. We also need to be sure we never make the same mistake twice and by involving the players in the goal setting for the game and the review after we have established a control over performances.
DO WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON FACING NEWCASTLE?
We will need to repeat all the positive aspects of the Worcester game and more against Newcastle who, similar to ourselves, have their distractions off the field but also have a returning International contingent of the highest order. I have no doubt that there will be a reaction from their last performance and obviously for us it is a "must win game" so it is all set for a tremendous occasion.
HOW PROUD WERE YOU OF YOUR SIDES PERFORMANCE LAST WEEK?
As I said after the Worcester game in the press conference we are still a very "young" side in relative terms, in that we have only been together for 18 months and we are competing in the highest of leagues against well establish sides who have been through the learning process at this level and have improved and then added quality players. But we are moving forward and the fans can rest assured that the players and coaches will be giving their all for this game and for the rest of the season as we respect the shirt, the work that has gone in over the last 15 years to get the club in this position and the support we receive.
