U19's produce quality performance

The depth of the Academy squad was tested to the full on Saturday against Nottingham U19's with a number of enforced changes having to be made due to injury
However, the players involved showed the competitive nature of the squad and the hard work that has gone on during the last few weeks with a comprehensive defeat of Nottingham. The first half performance was a real vindication of the style the academy are trying to play with; the interaction between the backs and forwards with the ball getting moved at every opportunity.
The forwards laid an excellent platform with superiority at both the set piece and in the loose whilst the backs ran incisively and showed real pace to stretch the Nottingham defence all over the pitch. The back row in particular, who were well led by Gareth Drabble, were always at hand to continue the movement not allowing Nottingham to set the defence at any stage so creating numerous try scoring opportunities.
Joe Ford (pictured) also marshalled the backline well using his experience gained within the A team squad to use possession intelligently with good variety and showed he has the potential to push through. His goal kicking was also outstanding, converting all nine tries and succeeding with a penalty from just within his own half.
The half time score line of 52-0 meant the second half was always going to be difficult to maintain the momentum but the players brought on showed they all have the potential to challenge for starting positions.
Only two further tries followed in the second half but numerous chances were created but wasted due to poor execution. However, the overall result and performance was excellent. The squad will again be tested as a number of players remain injured or unavailable for the trip to Moseley next Saturday so the squad will refocus this week to build on the positives of the start to the season.
The Academy squad is looking to further improve and enhance its already strong reputation and programme and is always looking for people interested in supporting them both in the matches and through sponsorship to continue the production line of talented players through to the 1st team squad. Any one interested in sponsoring the Academy please email Academy Manager Diccon Edwards at diccon.edwards@leedsrugby.com to discuss.
