Alberto Di Bernardo was signed for Leeds Carnegie from Cornish Pirates after an outstanding season with the West Country side in which he finished as the competition's second best points scorer. His efforts over the season were recognised when he was named the best fly half in the Rugby Times National One Team of the season.
When he signed for Leeds he quickly demonstrated his accurate kicking ability with a conversion and two penalties on his debut against Gloucester. His debut however was to end disappointingly when he broke a bone in his hand that was to rule him out for the next three games, he came back from this though and went onto make a further 23 appearances over the season and scored in each of these games to give him a tally of 185 points.
Born in Argentina, Alberto first gained representative honours with his country at U18 level before being called up for the Argentina A side. He later went onto play his club rugby in Italy with L'Aquila in the European Challenge Cup and also in the Super 10. After qualifying through residency he represented Italy A squad against Tonga in 2005, where Alberto's kicking helped keep up the pressure on the Tongans.
He signed for Cornish Pirates at the beginning of the 2006-07 season and was an instant success. He played in 29 games for the Pirates in his debut season, scored 2 tries, 62 conversions, 62 penalties and 3 drop goals to give him a points tally of 329 to finish second behind Leeds Carnegie's Leigh Hinton as the competition's top points scorer. He was part of Cornish Pirates' successful EDF Energy National Trophy winning side, and played a crucial role in this memorable victory, adding the conversion to the only try of the Final, which came from Vili Ma'asi, and four penalties to see off the Pirates' local rivals Exeter Chiefs.
