Leeds Career

When Phil Davies began planning for the 2003-2004 season, Colm Rigney was one of the first players he secured. Rigney had been chased by a number of Zurich Premiership clubs and from sides in France but he eventually decided to move to Headingley from Connacht and develop his no nonsense brand of rugby under Phil Davies. He joined the Tykes on a two-year contract. He made his debut on the opening day of the season against Bath and made an instant mark on the side with a try in 32-44 defeat. Colm started the next two games against Wasps and Rotherham but was then frustrated after receiving a nine match ban after an incident during the Wasps game. He made a return to the side in December in the 11-39 defeat to Leicester Tigers and he went onto start every game after that. He registered his second try for the club in the home fixture against Wasps when Leeds went down 7-11 to the London side. His return from suspension was just in time for him to help the Tykes Powergen Cup campaign, playing in both the quarter final and semi final as well as starting two games in the Heineken Cup against Toulouse and Ospreys. In the close season last year the Tykes bought three new back rows and Colm found himself left out of the side for the opening two games of the season but Colm did not take it for granted that he was surplus to requirements and forced his way back into the staring line up in the game against London Wasps and has gone on to have some of his best performances for the club this season, forcing himself to be considered in the team plans. One of Colms most impressive performances in his last season came against Newcastle Falcons, when in front of a record crowd Colm won a man of the match accolade. His two tries last season both came in Cup competitions, the first in the emphatic 121-0 victory over Valladolid in the European Shield and the second against Pertemp Bees in the sixth round of the Powergen Cup. Colm left the Tykes at the end of the 2004-05 season. He played 46 times for the Tykes and scored 3 tries.

Rugby Career

Rigney is the youngest member of the legendary Rigney clan, five of whom have been splendid competitors for the Buccaneers club. In 2002, Colm became a key member of Connacht's Senior squad even though he was still only 24 and played for them in the Celtic League, the Inter Provincial Championship and the Parker Pen Challenge Cup. The former Portlaoise player has worn the green of Ireland when they overwhelmed Japan in a Development international.
In his first season at Headingley, he frustrated after receiving a nine match ban after just three games but recovered well to feature in 15 out of the last 16 games of the season, scoring a try against Wasps at Headingley.
