Leeds Carnegie gave the London Wasps, the European Champions, the scare of their lives at Adams Park but in the end for the second week running they were left frustrated with no league points for their considerable effort, losing out 25-17.
Leeds Carnegie arrived at Adams Park knowing that the club had never recorded a victory over the reigning European Champions however their confidence would have been boosted by their improved performance against Sale the previous week.
The visitors dominated the early exchanges and enjoyed the majority of possession and field position however they were unable to capitalise on that advantage due to individual errors.
Wasps, who included former Leeds legend Tom Palmer in their starting line up, were ruthless when they got their opportunities with Danny Ciprani kicking two penalties in the opening 15 minutes to make it 6-0 to Wasps.
From the latter, Leeds managed to regain possession from the restart and attacked with purpose which earned a penalty from 25 metres out after 16 minutes. However, Leigh Hinton's effort went wide and Stuart Lancaster's side still trailed.
Leeds continued to keep the pressure on and had their best spell soon afterwards. Joe Bedford made a brilliant break from a quick tap penalty to open up the Wasps defence however as Leeds looked to spread the ball wide, Rob Vickerman was caught in two minds and his pass was intercepted by Fraser Waters. He raced through and looked certain to score however a great chase by Vickerman and Hinton stopped him 23 metres out and it took a heroic effort by the visitors defence to keep Wasps out as they probed left and right. Eventually, they were awarded put in to a scrum 22 metres out from in front of the posts and they made the most of the perfect position to attack. Leeds disrupted the scrum well but Lawrence Dallaglio was alert to the danger and quickly fed Eoin Reddan, who raced through a gap and put a reverse pass into to Joe Worsley to score next to the posts after 21 minutes. Ciprani added the conversion to make it 13-0.
Leeds were certainly not daunted against their illustrious opposition and continued to dominate possession however far too often the final pass went to ground or people were isolated on solo runs.
With time running out in the half, Wasps struck a killer blow with a breathtaking move that began with a 22 metre restart. A short kick from Ciprani was fielded by Worsley who broke up field, three passes later and Ciprani offloaded to Fraser Waters five metres out and he crashed over for the second try of the game. Ciprani made his first mistake of the afternoon by pulling his conversion wide but the home side now led 18-0.
Leeds did get some reward for their efforts with a penalty from Hinton on the stroke of half time to make it 18-3 at the interval.
The visitors were forced to make two changes at half time when Stuart Hooper and Adam Balding had to leave the field through injury however they continued to push Wasps all the way.
However, as in the first half, Wasps hit Leeds with a blistering counter attack. Hinton and Apo Satala had a miss up as Leeds attacked down the right wing and Wasps were able to kick clear. Within a minute, the home side were on the attack and Josh Lewsey stepped his way through the defence to score. Ciprani added the conversion before leaving seemingly with his side on the way to a comfortable bonus point win.
However, that was when the game turned on its head. Hinton missed a penalty on 50 minutes but soon afterwards the visitors crossed for their first try of the game. It came from a moment of brilliance by prop Tommy McGee. Running for the line 15 metres out, he chipped over the defence for Tom Biggs to collect. He took the ball in to contact before passing inside to Andy Tuilagi who fed Mike MacDonald to crash over in the corner. Alberto Di Bernardo added the conversion to make it 25-10.
The European Champions were really shaken after 69 minutes when Joe Bedford's quick thinking took him over between the posts after a barn storming run by Tuilagi. Di Bernardo's conversion took Leeds to within eight points and crucially one point away from a losing bonus point.
The closest Leeds came was thrilling chase by Biggs with Paul Sackey which the England man just got back to put the ball down. A late run looked like it might set up a fairytale ending but referee David Rose signalled a forward pass and Leeds' brave performance yielded no points on the league table for the second week running.
