Leigh Hinton scored a hat trick as Leeds Carnegie defeated Italian outfit Calvisano 45-5 at Headingley Carnegie.
Leeds made the best possible start when Tom Biggs latched onto a loose Calvisano pass inside his own half. The winger hacked the ball ahead before dribbling the ball over the line with his second touch and diving on the ball for the 33rd try of his career. Alberto Di Bernardo was unable to add the conversion but Leeds led 5-0 after just three minutes.
It got even better for the home side six minutes later when Leigh Hinton glided his way through the home defence on an arcing run before beating the last man to score in the corner. Di Bernardo was able to convert this time to make it 12-0.
Calvisano had their best spell of pressure after that score and managed to put Leeds under pressure in their own quarter. But too often runners were left isolated leading to penalties which enabled Leeds to clear their lines.
The home side then further increased their lead after good work by Apo Satala and Hinton had taken Leeds close to their line, Jon Dunbar was driven over by the pack for his side's third try of the afternoon. Di Bernardo added the touchline conversion to make it 19-0 after 25 minutes.
Leeds produced some of their best rugby of the season with great passages of handling and intelligent running lines however they were unable to turn their advantage in possession in to points and remained just 19-0 in front at the interval.
Calvisano came out fired up at the start of the second half and immediately got their first score of the game after just two minutes. They kept the ball alive well and eventually spread possession wide and winger Daniele Forcucci made the extra man to score in the corner. Warren Spragg was unable to convert the score but the Italians were in with a chance.
However, the home side were unfazed and continued to play a free flowing brand of rugby. Whilst they did not get their reward in the first half they crucially made the break through just before the hour mark. Firstly, skipper Stuart Hooper finished off a great spell of multi phase rugby as Leeds kept the ball alive through clever inter passing before Hooper galloped down the touchline to score the all important bonus point-earning fourth try.
Then Hinton scored his second try of the afternoon after brilliantly timing his run into the line from full back to slice through the visitors defence and score between the posts. Di Bernardo converted both tries to make it 33-5 to Leeds after 58 minutes.
Replacement hooker Vili Ma'asi got the simplest of tries next from a line out close to the Calvisano line. He took a return pass after some clever thinking at the front of the line and walked through untouched to score in the corner. Di Bernardo added the conversion.
Finally, with the last play of the game Hinton wrapped up his hat trick after finding himself on the end of a flowing move and diving in at the corner to make the final score 45-5 to Stuart Lancaster's team.
