Llanelli Scarlets produced a scintillating performance on an emotional night at Stradey Park to beat Leeds Carnegie 59-19 in the EDF Energy Cup.
The home side went over for eight converted tries - four of those before half-time, which they reached with a 31-7.
It was the first meeting between Leeds and Phil Davies since the latters departure from Headingley Carnegie after a decade at the helm. However, that matter was overshadowed by the death of Llanelli legend Ray Gravell on Wednesday and a rousing minutes applause before kick off marked the start of a fitting tribute by the players in the next eighty minutes.
Within 17 minutes, the Scarlets had opened up a 21-0 lead with three converted tries through 18-year-old debutant full-back Dan Evans, flanker James Bater and Mark Jones.
Stephen Jones, who converted the opening three tries, put over a penalty before Leeds hit back with a try through wing Tom Biggs.
Leeds had attempted to drive over from scrums close to the Llanelli line but the Scarlets disrupted at every opportunity. Eventually the visitors decided to spread the ball wide and a well worked move between Darren Edwards and Alberto Di Bernado created the space for Biggs, who cut a great line to come through and score between the posts.
However, in first-half injury time, former Leeds player Alix Popham sealed the bonus point with the fourth try following some neat inter-passing between the forwards.
Leeds gave themselves a lift four minutes into the second half when Biggs went over for his second try. The move came about from a big hit by Andy Tuilagi in midfield which caused the home attacker to spill the ball. Di Bernardo kicked ahead and Biggs showed lightening pace to zip passed both Llanelli defenders before dribbling ahead and touching down for his second score. Di Bernardo was unable to convert however and the score remained 31-12.
But the Scarlets cancelled that out when prop Iestyn Thomas crashed over in the corner, while Scott MacLeod and Simon Easterby also got in the act with tries as they went past 50 in impressive fashion.
Dan Evans went over for a second try which saw Stephen Jones take his points tally to 19 before Jonny Hepworth grabbed a late consolation for Leeds when they put on an impressive move from a tap penalty. Di Bernardo did convert this time but it could not prevent Leeds going down to a 59-19 defeat in a game that saw the home side send out a signal to the rest of European rugby.
