Ospreys 21 Leeds Carnegie 17

Ospreys 21 Leeds Carnegie 17

Leeds make six changes as they seek their first win in Wales.

In the backs Leigh Hinton, Scott Barrow and Lee Blackett come in, with Marco Wentzel and Erik Lund in the second row and Calum Clark replacing Jacob Rowan.

Marc Breeze and Hanno Dirksen make their first starts for the Ospreys in Thursday's LV=Cup dead rubber against Leeds at the Liberty Stadium.

Will Taylor, Conor McInerney and Ben John will make their Ospreys debuts if called up from the bench.

Both teams lie bottom of their pools and neither of them can make it through to the next round of the competition.

The Ospreys have no wins from three starts in this season's LV=Cup, while Leeds have just one, but at least the home side come into the game on a decent run of home form, with just one defeat in their last eight games at the Liberty Stadium.

Leeds have never won a match in Wales in five previous visits. The teams have met twice in the Heineken Cup, with the home team winning each of the two clashes in the 2003-04 season.

The game was played at a frantic pace in the opening ten minutes as both teams looked to make their mark on the game. The Ospreys had the  best attacking opportunity when Marc Breeze spotted a gap down the blind side but Leigh Hinton had to make a try saving tackle on Tom Prydie.

However, it was Leeds who got the first points on the board when winger Hanno Dirksen was caught offside at a kick. Joe Ford elected to go for the posts despite the chance being out on the touchline and with a biting swirling wind blowing around the stadium. However the young man  made no mistake and made it 3-0 to the visitors after 10 minutes.

Leeds were grateful to Lee Blackett for a crucial tackle on Dirksen soon afterwards as he pulled his opposite number in to touch next to the corner flag.

However, the Ospreys made the most of their next chance down the same flank. Leeds had been in possession in the home half but lost the ball and the Ospreys attacked at pace and eventually Dirksen was the last man to be bundled over in the corner. Prydie added the touchline conversion to make it 7-3 after 19 minutes.

Eight minutes later Prydie had the chance to extend the lead with a penalty from just inside the Leeds half but his attempt hit the upright and bounced away.

However, the Ospreys were controversially awarded a try by the video referee when Steve Tandy appeared to be held up short of the line. The try was awarded though and Prydie added the conversion to make it 14-3.

Leeds responded with great spirit and could have scored when Blackett broke through near the touchline but the Ospreys came through offside to snuff out the chance. Carnegie opted to go for a scrum from the ensuing penalty. Eventually the forwards rumbled their way towards the line from a number of rucks and finally Erik Lund dragged his giant frame over the line to score. Ford added the conversion to make it 14-10 to the home side with two minutes remaining in the half.

Ford had a chance to cut the deficit in stoppage time with a drop goal attempt but he pulled it wide and the gap remained four points the difference.

The visitors continued to dominate possession after the re-start but they became their own worst enemies as they got the wrong side of the Welsh referee and conceded a string of penalties that meant they were continually retreating into their own half. Youngster Prydie twice had the chance to extend his side's lead with a penalty but on both occasions he slapped at the kick and pushed the attempt wide.

The home side were able to make their territory count after 65 minutes but Leeds will be disappointed with how it came about. For the second time in the match, Carnegie managed to win a scrum against the head but Andy Gomarsall and Calum Clark combined to knock the ball on. From the scrum, scrum half Jamie Nutbrown picked up and arced around the outside of Clark to go through and score between the posts. Prydie added the conversion to make it 21-10 to the hosts.

Despite the scoreboard, Leeds had dominated the play up front especially in the scrum where they had destroyed the Ospreys eight. Eventually that pressure brought a score as the home side were reduced to 14 men when prop Ryan Bevington was sin binned. After they were twice penalised under their posts, referee Morris had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try after they came through offside. Ford added the conversion to set up a grandstand finish in stoppage time.

However, Leeds struggled to get out of their own half in the remaining time as the Ospreys wound down the clock looking to close out the game.
