Leeds Carnegie ran in eight tries to see off a spirited challenge by neighbours Otley at Headingley Carnegie with Hendre Fourie, Scott Armstrong and Rob Vickerman all grabbing a brace of tries each.
Leeds Carneige showed seven changes to the side that won at Exeter last week but coach Neil Back was asking for a ruthless performance from his charges in this local derby.
The home side got the first opportunity to get the scoreboard going after just two minutes when Otley were penalised for offside and Alberto Di Bernardo duly opened his account for the day to make it 3-0.
However, the visitors took a shock lead after five minutes when a wide pass was intercepted by winger Danny Smith, who raced 90 metres to score between the posts. Tom Rhodes added the conversion to make it 7-3.
Normal service was resumed after eight minutes when Di Bernardo showed a great piece of quick thinking to set himself up for a try. Having earned a penalty 20 metres out, he took a quick tap, chipped over the defence before collecting the ball himself to score between the posts.
The visitors were lucky not to be reduced to 14 men straight from the kick off when former Leeds junior Jon Buchanan pulled down Scott Mathie, who was supporting a great break by Fosi Pala'amo. As it was, Buchanan received just a warning from referee Mark Wilson.
Whilst the home side were able to attack with purpose and drive, they were constantly frustrated by Otley, who looked to stop Leeds from gaining any sort of momentum. Eventually Di Bernardo was awarded a penalty within range of the goal and he extended the lead to 13-7 after 19 minutes.
Otley were reduced to 14 men after 25 minutes when number eight Rob Baldwin was sin binned after referee Wilson lost patience with the visitors tactics as Leeds were five metres from the Otley line. Rob Rawlinson elected to revert the penalty to a scrum and good hands by Mathie, Di Bernardo and Vickerman allowed Scott Armstrong to race round the outside to score his first league try for the club in the corner. Di Bernardo was unable to add the conversion by Leeds now led 18-7.
Tom Rhodes missed the chance to cut the deficit after 30 minutes when his penalty attempt from 40 metres out went unluckily wide.
Just as Baldwin was preparing to return to the action, Leeds extended their lead even further however. A good take by Jon Pendlebury at the line out set up the platform to drive for the line and eventually Hendre Fourie emerged as the try scorer. Di Bernardo struck and excellent conversion to make it 25-7 after 34 minutes and that was how it remained until half time.
It may have been two years since the last derby meeting between these two sides but there was no shortage of niggle as the second half kicked off. First of all, the unlikely protagonist of Alberto Di Bernardo was involved in a set to with Otley centre Kyle Dench before tempers boiled over after 45 minutes following a late and deliberate high tackle by full back Ian Shuttleworth. Rhys Oakley had taken a mark inside his own 22 metre area and as he attempted a quick tap, Shuttleworth came in high from an offside position and a flurry of punches followed. Shuttleworth was sent to the bin and within two minutes Leeds had sealed the try bonus through Fourie. Di Bernardo added the conversion to make it 32-7.
The South African spotted a gap near the Otley line and barged his way over for his third try of the season. That was to be his last piece of action in the game as he was replaced by Jon Dunbar with a blood injury.
However, his side built on that momentum and they did not have to wait long for their fifth try. Rob Vickerman broke through 40 metres out and then raced passed the cover to score in the corner. Di Bernardo was off target this time but his side now led 37-7 after 51 minutes.
That lead was extended four minutes later when this time Vickerman turned provider. He again broke through in midfield but, realising that he could not make it to the line, he put in a wonderfully weighted kick for Armstrong to race through and touch down for his second try. Di Bernardo struck a great conversion from the touchline to make it 44-7.
All credit to Otley, who never gave in and managed to score a deserved second try when Baldwin burst through in midfield before the rangy number eight galloped through to score in the corner. Rhodes converted from the touchline to leave the score 44-14 to Leeds.
The home side broke through the 50 point barrier for the first time this season with ten minutes remaining in the game. Good work by the forwards saw them marauding upfield before kick ball along the ball in created an extra man outwide and Richard Welding dived in at the corner. Di Bernardo added the conversion from the touchline to make it 51-14.
Leeds wanted to finish with a flourish and they did just that in the final minute when Vickerman once again danced his way through the defence and, despite having two support runners, elected to back himself to score between the posts. Di Bernardo converted the eighth try of the day to make the final score 58-14 to Leeds Carnegie.
