Connacht 17 Leeds Carnegie 24

Leeds opened up their new campaign with a hard fought 24-17 victory against a strong Connacht side in Galway. It was a game of two halfs as the Magners League side had first use of a strong breeze following earlier torrential rain.
Leeds struggled to cope with refereeing interpretation early on allowing Andy Dunne to score one penalty. He also converted the try that followed lineout drive when Jon Pendlebury's was sin binned for persistent infringement. Carnegie were getting back into the game at half time and 10-0 did not look a daunting deficit.
Leeds soon took advantage of the pace of Peter Wackett who had replaced Tom Biggs as he latched on to a probing kick from Joe Bedford to race round under the posts. Brooks added the conversion and a penalty a few minutes later as the visitors started to dominate.
Leeds made several changes, fully utilising their large squad and around the hour a massive drive and strike against the head culminated with Rhys Oakley scoring. The forwards had a commanding afternoon in the set scrum despite the efforts of former Leeds favourite Colm Rigney. Two minutes later and swift handing saw Leigh Hinton race over in the corner. Alberto Di Bernardo converted both from the touchline.
Connacht did manage a try with the final play but Leeds were buoyed by a solid performance from so many players. The midfield defence was strong with Lee Blackett to the fore and coach Neil Back was pleased with the first performance following the training camp in Limerick
